Working on an ICU step-down unit gave me valuable skills but I wanted more time to educate my patients and ease their fears, so after six years in the hospital I went into the community doing home visits, first as an IV (intravenous) nurse, then as a Case Manager in Palliative Care and Hospice. It has been this work at the bedside, supporting families and their dying loved ones\u00a0that <em>brought Nursing into my Soul.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 2004 I was invited to join the Integrative Health Committee, a sub-committee of our local Medical Society where collaboration between Physicians and Alternative, Complementary practitioners pursued the common goals of increasing awareness in various healing modalities and sharing information on the newest research to advance the field of Integrative Medicine. Those twelve years taught me a lot about Functional Medicine and I still believe it needs to be THE Medicine of the 21st Century. Since 2005 &#8220;Compassionate Consulting&#8221; has evolved from Health Coaching to End-of-Life Support.<\/p>\n<p>In my early years as a nurse I was very interested in Personal Development and Natural Healing, spending more than fifteen years studying those fields and doing my own personal work. I became an Aromatherapist, a Natural Health Professional and Professional Coach. In 2011 I was ordained a Non-Denominational Minister and began to study various world religions.<\/p>\n<p>As my children were advancing through high school I needed to get creative with work and parenting. I juggled some part time jobs alongside my business. I was an Auditor in doctor\u2019s offices, a staff nurse in Adult Day Care and a Substitute School Nurse when time allowed. These different careers gave me diverse experiences and eventually led me to local Comfort Care Homes for the dying which provide end-of-life care for two people at a time. I remember the nurse who first greeted me for a hospice interview &#8211; with a HUG!<\/p>\n<p>My experiences with the dying and their families taught me how to communicate with doctors, hospitals, and home care agencies. The most significant thing I learned was how to hold a \u2018space\u2019 for family members to process different parts of this big event. I found that I really value <em>taking the time<\/em> to listen to patients, to offer them Presence, to ask questions about what they are hoping for and <em>taking the time<\/em> to be sure families understand what their medical team is saying to them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column_inner
